Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has spent a total of 13 years in detention
The United States is calling on Burmese military leaders to immediately release Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who marks a total of 13 years under house arrest on Friday.
State Department spokesman Robert Wood said in a statement Thursday that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has endured unlawful detention over the many years and she has remained a steady beacon of hope and inspiration to those seeking a peaceful, democratic Burma.
And the European Parliament also condemned the continued detention of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, calling for her immediate release.
The European Parliament urged the Asian and European leaders, meeting in an ASEM summit in Beijing Friday and Saturday, "to jointly appeal to the Myanmar military authorities to release all political prisoners."
